Package travel
Key rights under Directive (EU) 2015/2302
A plain-English guide to the key protections that apply to package travellers.
Information before booking
You must receive the essential information about the package before entering into the package travel contract.
Responsibility for the package
At least one trader is responsible for the proper performance of every travel service included in the contract.
A contact during the journey
You must receive an emergency telephone number or contact-point details for the organiser or travel agent.
Transfer to another traveller
You may transfer the package to another person after giving reasonable notice; justified additional costs may apply.
Limits on price increases
The package price may rise only for specified costs, where the contract allows it, and no later than 20 days before departure. An increase above 8% gives you the right to end the contract; relevant cost decreases give you the right to a reduction.
Significant changes or cancellation
If an essential part of the package changes significantly, you may end the contract without a termination fee and receive a refund. If the organiser cancels before departure, a refund and, where appropriate, compensation are due.
Extraordinary circumstances
You may end the contract without a termination fee before departure where unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances significantly affect the package.
Cancellation for personal reasons
You may end the contract at any time before departure for an appropriate and justifiable termination fee.
Alternatives when services cannot be provided
Suitable alternative arrangements must be offered at no extra cost where significant travel services cannot be provided as agreed. If the problem substantially affects the package and is not remedied, you may end the contract without a termination fee.
Price reduction and compensation
You may be entitled to a price reduction and compensation where travel services are not performed or are performed improperly.
Assistance in difficulty
The organiser must provide appropriate assistance if you are in difficulty during the package.
Insolvency protection
If the organiser becomes insolvent, traveller payments must be refunded. Where transport is included and insolvency occurs after departure, repatriation must be secured.
